What is an intranet

iAn Intranet is a corporate network, much similar to a Local Area Network for its contents, but based on Internet technology. In such a way, it is possibile to make accessible to the users the corporate data with the intuitive internet user interface.

Obviously, security must be cared for, since external (internet) users must not be allowed to peek into corporate data.

A more interesting scenario is that of bulding a Virtual Private Network (VPN), where two locations of the same enterprise share their data across a cheap segment of internet; security measures (i.e.: an encrypted tunneling of private IP addresses) protect the data against observers.
