    System daemons?

A system daemon is a program activated on a server, periodically or in response to some event.

For example, an already active daemon is the ftp monitor, a system that periodically checks if something changed on a given ftp site, and sends an e-mail to the user if there are new or updated files; so it is useful for being informed of every new release of a given program (if you are interested, ask operator@piw.it).

Another active daemon is the back-ftp: instead of remaining on-line for a long, slow, download, an user is allowed to leave his/her request; the download from the remote site will be performed during the night (where the load of the network will be low), and the user will find the file(s) as mail attachments the day after.
